Ellen G. White (1827-1915) was an American religious leader and author who is best known for her role in the formation of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. She was born in Gorham, Maine, and was raised in a Methodist family. In 1840, when she was just 12 years old, she had a traumatic accident that left her with a severe head injury and ongoing health problems for the rest of her life.

At the age of 17, Ellen had a religious conversion and began to preach in her local Methodist church. In 1844, she became involved in the Millerite movement, which predicted the imminent return of Jesus Christ. When the predicted date passed without incident, Ellen and her husband James White (whom she married in 1846) joined with other Millerites to form what would eventually become the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Ellen White played a key role in the development of Seventh-day Adventist beliefs and practices, and is considered by many to be a prophetess. She wrote extensively on religious topics, and her writings are still widely read and respected by members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. She is also credited with helping to establish numerous schools and health institutions that are still in operation today.
