After the war, he moved to New York City and became part of the “Lost Generation” of writers and artists who were disillusioned with the post-war world. Fitzgerald’s first novel, “This Side of Paradise,” was published in 1920 and was a commercial success. He went on to write several other novels, including “The Beautiful and Damned” and “Tender Is the Night.”

Despite his success as a writer, Fitzgerald struggled with alcoholism and financial problems throughout his life. Fitzgerald died of a heart attack in Hollywood, California in 1940 at the age of 44.
